CBD Can Change Your Life (Are you ready for it?)
There’s a lot of confusion about CBD. Is it legal? Will it get me high? What IS it anyway? SAM’s Apothecary is here to help you navigate the complicated world of CBD products.
Cannabidiol or CBD for short is a derivative of either the hemp plant or marijuana (usually). According to the National Institutes of Health, “Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid derived from Cannabis species, which is devoid of psychoactive activity, with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic and chemopreventive activities.” Phytocannabinoid is basically just a big word for naturally occurring cannabinoid. A Cannabinoid is one of many chemical compounds found in hemp and marijuana plants (THC would be another, more famous one).
To break it down:CBD comes from either hemp or marijuana, it is a chemical compound that WILL NOT give you a high (unlike its cousin THC), and it has numerous therapeutic properties and uses. Google is full of anecdotal stories of people using CBD to cure ailments from insomnia to seizures. Because CBD is garnering more attention in recent years there are also numerous studies in peer-reviewed journals examining the benefits of CBD products.
The next big question:Is it legal?
The answer: If you live in Washington, yes! Because every part of the marijuana plant is legal in Washington!
The other answer: CBD itself is not THC and does not contain THC. However, check the percentage of THC on the label of the CBD product you are buying. Depending on the manner in which the CBD you are consuming is obtained, and whether it is coming from a marijuana plant or a hemp plant, the product you purchase may contain THC.
CBD at SAM’s Apothecary: The CBD products we carry are 100% THC free and our labels state that our products contain 0.0% THC.
Disclaimer:be aware that if you live outside of Washington your state may not yet have an accurate understanding of CBD and incorrectly assume that it contains an illegal substance. This article suggests that the DEA will not do anything about CBD oil, but local law enforcement may not have the same understanding.
Even the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes that CBD should not be considered a scheduled substance.
Now, why would you need/want CBD?
Just this week the FDA approved a new CBD based drug to treat epilepsy. Researchers have been studying the effects of CBD on epilepsy for decades and this is a huge step forward in recognizing the benefits that the hemp/marijuana plants have to offer.
If you’re not epileptic CBD offers, “analgesic, anti-inflammatory” benefits as well, and many people offer that it has helped curb their anxiety, insomnia, and a host of other issues.
