Smudging. Have you heard of it? (No, not like your makeup smudges, or having a smudge on your face). Maybe you have heard the term, but there is a chance you don’t know much more beyond that (or you could be an expert, and smudge every day!) Either way, lets talk about it!

Smudging is the act of burning sage in a ritual fashion to clear the energy/juju/woo woo/vibes in a space, or from an object when they feel muddy/creepy/bad/scary/etc. There are many different ways/traditions/rituals for smudging. The important part is the intention. You want to have the intention that the negative energy, the non-helpful vibes go away, and you can be left in your space at peace.

SAM’s carries everything you need to smudge your home. Come by or contact us to get started. All you really need is a bundle of sage (or other medium of choice) and something to light it with. It’s very easy and inexpensive to get started on the path to a more balanced-feeling home.

When smudging you will want to light your sage/lavender/frankincense and go in a counter-clockwise direction in your space, starting on the topmost floor of the home, with 1 door OR window open. Do the same for each floor of your home. Once you are finished, shut your doors and windows and take a moment to ‘feel’ the energy in the space, if it still feels ‘muddy’ then you will want do it again. If not, you will use a positive medium, like an aroma spray with citrus or cedar, and head through the house again, going clockwise, again starting on the top floor, and doing the same on each floor.

You will develop your own ritual/tradition for how you smudge, and the most important thing is to do it in a way that you feel is right for you and your circumstances. Your space and your home are very personal, and you want to treat smudging the same.

If you are interested in learning more SAM’s offers a Smudging Basics class at least once per year. Even if you have been smudging forever, we are certain you will learn something new in this wonderful class!
